  1. 1777-1852. US politician. He stood
  2. unsuccessfully three times for the
  3. presidency: as a Democratic-Republican 1824,
  4. as a National Republican 1832, and as a Whig
  5. 1844. He supported the War of 1812 against
  6. Britain, and tried to hold the Union together
  7. on the slavery issue by the Missouri
  8. Compromise of 1820, and again in the
  9. compromise of 1850. He was secretary of state
  10. 1825-29, and is also remembered for his
  11. `American system', which favoured the
  12. national bank, internal improvements to
  13. facilitate commercial and industrial
  14. development, and the raising of protective
  15. tariffs.
